Making beautiful, functional, and effective type in the long-term requires a lot more than individual glyphs. Multiscript typography is becoming more crucial in an interconnected world, as is developing the next generation of type design talent.
At the BITS 11 conference in Bangkok (2025), our founders, Veronika Burian and José Scaglione, were invited to speak about multiscript typography, alongside type designer Pooja Saxena. The three had an informal and illuminating conversation about our Primarium project to map how handwriting is taught, research into pan-African alphabets, and the Gerard Unger Scholarship.
“Being a designer from Asia, it is always a pleasure to be at BITS, where this vast region’s multicultural and multiscript typographic concerns take centre stage,” Pooja said. “This time was particularly special because it came with the opportunity to share the stage with Veronika and José to talk about TypeTogether’s community-oriented initiatives, particularly Primarium, an effort I am proud to have been involved in.”

And at the 2025 Fontstand conference in The Hague, José and Veronika marked the tenth anniversary of TypeTogether’s Gerard Unger Scholarship with several activities, including a talk that looked back over the scholarship’s history. The annual Gerard Unger Scholarship provides a promising type design student with mentorship as they complete their winning project, a stipend, and the release of their typeface through TypeTogether. Merit winners also receive feedback and encouragement on their designs.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the scholarship, TypeTogether has published a book, Letters for the future: Ten years of the Gerard Unger Scholarship (order your copy here), and organised an exhibition featuring the work of both winners and merits. To top it off, five scholarship winners were able to come to the exhibition opening.
“The Fontstand event was very special for us,” Veronika said, “because we were able to present and publicly celebrate the projects of the scholarship winners while some of them were there. The audience could directly interact with the winners and ask questions, and our mentees could reap the fruits of their labour.”
“The overwhelmingly positive feedback we got from the attendees is also a great encouragement to keep going with the scholarship,” she added.
